5 Things to Avoid after a Tummy Tuck!

Let’s face it, after having kids or losing a crazy amount of weight, your skin doesn't look so good. What's the best option for you? Yup, a tummy tuck. With a tummy tuck, you can easily get beautiful skin and a flat, fit-looking belly. It’s an absolutely amazing procedure, but you have to know what you're getting into. The tummy tuck procedure does have a slightly difficult recovery process and the procedure itself is not minimally invasive… However, if you do stick through it, you’re going to love yourself for making the decision.

You’ll have to avoid a few things while you’re recovering. Since you’re going to have to adjust your schedule for a couple weeks following the procedure, it’s important to know what exactly you should avoid.

1. Working Out / Exercising

After a few days post-surgery, some light walking is permitted, however, pretty much everything else is against the tummy tuck laws. For about 6 weeks you must avoid rigorous physical activity After that, you can check with your doctor to see if you can get back to it. But by light walking, you’ll be able to expedite the healing process and enhance blood flow. So keep that in mind!

2. People who are Sick

You obviously want to keep your risk of infection as low as you can, right? Well, to do that, you must be careful who you are around. Steer yourself away from anyone who has a cold or any sort of illness. Do this until your recovery is finished, unless you want to risk infections or other issues!

3. Drinking or Smoking

Do not smoke after your tummy tuck! Smoking messes with your blood flow because of the carbon monoxide which is inhaled. This interference negatively affects the healing process of your incisions.

For alcohol, there are also multiple reasons why you should drink after the tummy tuck. First off, alcohol doesn’t mix well with the pain medication you take. Most importantly however, one of alcohol’s most notorious side effects is thinning your blood. This is the last thing you would want while recovering! Just check-in with your surgeon and they will let you know when it’s alright to enjoy your next margarita.

4. Wearing the Wrong Clothing

Chances are that one of the reasons you did you tummy tuck was so you can look good in that nice tight dress. At Brand Surgical, we strongly recommend wearing a compression suit after the surgery. It must be worn for 3 months in order to help reshape the area. You have to wear it for as long as you can tolerate, but when you aren’t wearing it, make sure to stay away from uncomfortable clothing.

These types of clothes will irritate the incisions that need to heal. Just stick to loose and comfortable clothing during the first couple of weeks. Some examples are a nice, loose house dress, or loose pajamas and sweats.

5. Driving

Our doctors do the surgery with general anesthesia, meaning you will be fully asleep during the procedure. After waking up, you’ll still be a little dizzy, so you must not drive yourself home! Make sure you have a relative or friend with you to drive you home.

But even after the wooziness wears off, you still won’t be able to drive for a while. You’ll have to wait until you’re fully off your pain meds and your doctor clears you. Even then, you might now want to drive - and that’s okay - just be in touch with your doctor if you have any questions.
